Are We Corn?

Images One in 8 New Yorkers is said to have diabetes. An interesting factoid as the city fights for food labeling. Two independent film makers did a poignant documentary about "corn" as understood through growing an acre of corn in Iowa for a year. The message ran deep into food supply systems, nutrition (or lack of) American farm culture/traditions and family business. Try to see "King Corn" http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/kingcorn/

Diving Bell

Images1 This spring, after the hype of the movie died down, I wanted to read The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. Written under such extraordinary circumstances (dictated by Bauby by blinking one eyelid from his "locked in" state). It has the sparseness of really good moments of Duras with both tortuous and sweet thoughts stemming from an abrupt switch from charmed to impossible life.

Books to Spark a Future

Two books, Common Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet and Three Cups of Tea: One Mans Mission to Promote Peace One School at a Time are highly recommended reading for anyone who is trying to grasp a sense of agency and problem solving in the current political climate. (reviews below). Three Cups is particularly important argument for the value of education.
