Remember the joke, "If you can remember the 60s, you weren't there"? Well, just in case that is true Katy Siegel has put together an exhibition at the National Academy of Design called High Times, Hard Times: New York Paintings 1967-1975. The exhibit presents a wide view of experimental abstract painting in works by 38 diverse artists. There are some great lectures that accompany the show too. Question: What is the Whitney, but not the Whitney...a tiny, corporate, disguised Whitney? Answer: the ATLRIA space across from Grant Central Station, Park at 42nd. In this under-visited museum space, they seem to curate bigger risks. This month "Breakout Spaces" continues to challenge the boundaries between street and high culture. Past breakout lectures have included visits by Vito Acconci, for instance (and if you are curious about whether or not he can still masturbate on demand and for a prolonged period...sorry I can't address that question!) But ... ALTRIA is worth a visit. Upcoming events below.
