Brent Wilson:Journals & Journeys

The Pearl Street Gallery in Brooklyn is exhibiting art educator Brent Wilson's travel notebooks  in a show that reveals a "lifetime's worth of journeys...imaginary and otherwise." He is a model of an art educator curious about the world and restless in his pursuit of experiences to feed art making.  (Mar 3 - Apr 1 ). Reception: March 17. www.pearlstreetgallery.net  Wilson

High Times, Hard Times

1171593364htht_cover_webRemember the joke, "If you can remember the 60s, you weren't there"? Well, just in case that is true Katy Siegel has put together an exhibition at the National Academy of Design called High Times, Hard Times:  New York Paintings 1967-1975. The exhibit presents a wide view of experimental abstract painting in works by 38 diverse artists. There are some great lectures that accompany the show too. Altered, Stitched, Gathered

Cont_32For those of you who are nostaligic for the domestic art of sewing or who live for revisionist twists, PS 1's new show (opening Dec 14 – Jan 22) Altered Stitched, Gathered should be a treat. Details below. Image: Gunilla Klingberg. Mandala Poster / Repeat Pattern. 2006.

Tiny Whitney

Question: What is the Whitney, but not the Whitney...a tiny, corporate, disguised Whitney? Answer: the ATLRIA space across from Grant Central Station, Park at 42nd. In this under-visited museum space, they seem to curate bigger risks. This month "Breakout Spaces" continues to challenge the boundaries between street and high culture. Past breakout lectures have included visits by Vito Acconci, for instance (and if you are curious about whether or not he can still masturbate on demand and for a prolonged period...sorry I can't address that question!) But ... ALTRIA is worth a visit. Upcoming events below.

Cai Guo-Qiang on Roof

000_0016Nontransparent Monument (2006) is a work by Cai Guo-Qiang on the rooftop of the Metropolitan Museum for a few more weeks. (Hurry before the roof closes for the season!) The large low-relief granite carving illustrates major news events post-911. It is fun to guess what the images can be: Disney, International Art Fairs, Dictators, Storms...the catalog explain what the complex interwoven images are. The dead pigeon piece is tasteless and the alligators are dramatic against the park backdrop. Worth a visit beautiful fall day visit. 000_0009

Kerry Stevens on Beauty

Torso92ejpgNew York-area artist Kerry Stevens is participating in a group show at Headbones Gallery, a Toronto Gallery specializing in drawing. Her large goauche monotone figures are twice removed from life––a small figure in clay is formed, tinted, then  drawings are made from the 3D figure. After the opening, each artist's work stays on file for a year giving visitors access to over 1000 drawings at a time.  From the exhibition description: Beauty & Obsession meet each other in the realms of love & art where an allowance is made for the indiscretion of indulgences.
Dates: Sep 6 – Oct 9, 2006 • Headbones Gallery, 260 Carlaw Ave. 202B, Toronto
